Focus Live 2024 - Born to learn

Children in early childhood spontaneously acquire cognitive, linguistic and relational skills with extraordinary speed and effectiveness. This development is made possible by a brain that moulds itself according to the stimuli the child seeks in the environment, and by predispositions typical of our species.
But how do we study the minds of the very young? And what experiences can adults propose to support their development?

This is explained by Prof. Viola Macchi Cassia, guest at FocusTALKS (in Italian)

BrightNight 2024

Last September 27, in the context of BrightNight 2024 - European Researchers' Night, the conference 'The Roots of the Future' was held in the beautiful Cappella Guinigi in Lucca, an extraordinary opportunity to explore the development of the human brain from early childhood to adulthood.

Prof. Viola Macchi Cassia, together with experts such as Irene Ronga and Fabio Apicella, moderated by Davide Bottari, delved into how environment and experience shape cognitive and social functions in early life.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this an unforgettable evening!

ESCAN 2024

From 22 to 25 May, the ESCAN - European Society of Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience conference was held in Ghent, Belgium.

It was a great opportunity for all the researchers who participated to meet and discuss their research! We would like to thank all the families whose participation gave us the opportunity to bring BabyLab's studies to this important scientific event.

Stokke guests at the Fuori Salone!

On the occasion of the Fuorisalone, Stokke invited Prof. Elena Nava, a member of our Bicocca Child&BabyLab team, together with Italian actor Claudio Santamaria, to participate in a special event.
Inspired by the theme “Growing with Nature,” Prof. Nava shared with the audience some of our latest research on brain development in children, explaining how already in utero they begin to perceive sounds, tactile stimuli and emotions.
She also illustrated the concept of “brain plasticity,” or the brain's ability to learn and adapt rapidly through experiences and environmental stimuli, especially in the first two years of life.
During the meeting, we also reflected on the importance of secure attachment between parent and child, which is an essential basis for enabling young children to explore the environment with confidence. Nature, rich in stimuli and opportunities for discovery, is the perfect context for these formative experiences.
It was an evening of dialogue and sharing ideas, where we were able to emphasize how important it is to “grow with nature.”
Special thanks to Stokke for the invitation!

BCCCD24

January the BCCCD24 - Budapest CEU Conference on Cognitive Development 2024 was held in Budapest.

It was the perfect opportunity for researchers in developmental psychology to get together and discuss research topics and methodologies in the field of study.

In the post you will find the contributions made by our researchers, which were also made thanks to your participation in the laboratory studies

Let's play with Science (at Bicocca Village)

Sunday 17 December 2023 was a day of science and fun for children and families at Bicocca Village, in collaboration with Bicocca Child & Baby Lab and Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca.

The event was a special opportunity to introduce children to science through games and interactive activities, offering a series of workshops to stimulate their curiosity and understanding of the world around them.

From ants to children: a journey through the evolution of animal and human behavior -Meeting series March-May 2023 at the Museum of Natural History, Mila

Are we really so different from ants, chicks and dogs?

This series of talks is designed to explore how the behavior and brains of different animal species are more similar to the human mind than we might imagine.
In collaboration with University of Milan-Bicocca, Milan Museum of Natural History, Pleiades Science Farmer and CoopCulture.

Publication of the book Nati per apprendere

Viola Macchi Cassia, Ermanno Quadrelli

The book presents the most recent scientific research results that show how, in the period between conception and the end of the first year of life, children are actively involved in the selection of experiences from which to learn and in the consequent modification of the functional organisation of their brains. It is through this intense dialogue with the physical and social environment that the foundations for physical and psychological health throughout the life cycle are built and the development of cognitive, emotional-relational and communicative-linguistic abilities is initiated. On the basis of this evidence, the book offers parents, educators and health professionals indications on how to promote children's access to experiences from which they can learn, thus facilitating the establishment of the learning that will support their development.
